May 23, 2014

Some of you know me and most of you don't. I've taken delivery of my 2009 GTR July 8th, 2008. I've been in the scene for awhile and also painted my car midnight purple 3 from the R34 Skyline.

Since August of last year my car has been back and forth to the dealer with some issues. The first thing that started it all off was P0011. The car would shift harshly into the next gear. Took it in and they replaced my bell housing and a few other things. I got the car back about 3.5 weeks later. October comes around and I put around 1800 miles on it since I got the car back. One night, I was going out, then the problem came back. The same P0011 code. The next morning I drive it back to the dealer. On my way to the dealer I end up losing the odd gears too(P0729). They had for another 4 weeks. Nissan and the warranty company were dicking around trying every scenario possible to fix the car except replace the tranny. They fixed the car and I picked up in beginning of Dec. on a Saturday and drive it home. Monday comes and I decided that I want to drive to work. Guess what, P0011 and P0729 again. Took the car back and they replaced some more parts and put some new caps on the tranny. I've been fighting for a new transmission, but again they don't want to replace it. I get the car back sometime in January 2014. Less than 2,800 miles later while in Las Vegas doing an oil change, the car throws a P0729 code and I lose my even gears. My Friend Mike who's a Master GTR tech at Planet Nissan did a clutch relearn and got the gears back. We drove it around and the even gears went out again. We did that about 3 times. He told me that I can make it back home as long as I don't go into the 6th gear. I drove back home to LA(4hr drive). 3 miles away from home, the even gears go out again, but this time I can go pass 25mph. That was a long 3 miles. I'm glad it happened close to home and not in the middle of no where. Nissan has my car again. The manager and tech have been wanting and fighting the warranty company and Nissan for a new transmission. I hope I get it this time. Btw my car has 92k miles and I have the 100k warranty plan. I have never used any after market ecu tune on my car. The only mods that the car has are an exhaust, and a custom paint job. Nissan has my car listed as heavily modded which is a good laugh. I've been on these forums and heard of people with heavily modded cars than mine that have had their tranny replaced. I just don't know why they're trying to give me a hard time about it. The data was sent to Nissan 2 days ago.

Model Year (US Assumed, Specify if global)
2009 (US)

Relevant ECM/TCM Code(s)
P0729 - second failure!
Long story short: From August 2013 -January 2014, my car has been at the dealer a for 13 weeks(2-5 weeks at a time). The code that started it all was P0011(intake valve timing bank ) then the P0729. I have the 100k extended warranty, but dealing with the warranty company and Nissan is a big headache.

Symptoms of failure
Lost 2, 4, & 6 the first time
Lost 1,3,5 and R - limp mode over the weekend

Approx ODO at time of failure
92,000

What were you doing at time of failure:
Just changed all the fluids and took it out for a spin around the block

Mods at time of failure
Never flashed ECU other than what was recalled by Nissan

Track use pre-failure (miles or XX minute sessions or track days, # launches on lc version X, etc)
None

Warranty filed? Date (mm/yy) Approved?
August 1st, 2013 - January 2014 Yes,
May 20th, 2014 - The car is currently at the dealer waiting and hoping to get a new transmission, This will be my 4th time taking it in to be fixed. The warranty company and Nissan will exhaust evert single resource to NOT replace the tranny which wastes time and money. They better replace it this time.

UPDATE: 5.28.2014
After all the possible steps that the Nissan techs told the GTR Master tech should do, they finally came to the conclusion that the transmission needs to be replaced. Now that Nissan is on board, they're going to send out an engineer to get the data from the car and see what else needs to be replaced. Once they do that, it has to be submitted to the warranty company for approval.

UPDATE(today 5.29.2014)

The Security Plus warranty company is denying the claim. They said that I modded my TCM. I call bullshit on this, because I have never used a Cobb APor any other device on my car or had anyone run it. They only thing that was done was on TCM were clutch relearns. I'm getting so annoyed with them now. Universal is going call Nissan NA in the morning to see if they can somehow override the claim. The warranty can't even prove that the car has been changed. They're only going off of what was written down and not the actual data.

the facts are you have a 100K warranty, your car is under that mileage. you have never tuned it and you have documented failures over an extended period of time. I cant understand their logic and hopefully it will be resolved with the call to Nissan as there needs to be proof you had flashed it. to my knowledge that is straight forward as in you can tell if it was overwritten or not. Knowing that you never did I think when nissan actually looks at it that will be clear

There is a hot line for Nissan issues concerning the Nissan extended warranty.
Is it a Nissan factory warranty or aftermarket.......
Try to take it to another dealer and have them read codes and output in writing , no ECU flash.

Hunter,

It's the Nissan Secruity Plus warranty. If I were to take it to another dealer, it would be like starting over again and probably harder to get a claim going too. The dealer will talk to Nissan tomorrow and I'll be making a few phones calls as well.

i don't know what's the point behind all of their actions. man, you go and screw all of them. you are paying for all of this. the other point you should open is all the time wasted with the car in the dealer!!! its seems that the car spent most of its time away with the dealer than with the owner. you have to be serious with all your comments and stick to that. i assure you the trans. will be replaced since they are going in circles and have nothing more to throw on the table.

such stories make me upset and hate this car.

good luck

Had the same issues with my 2010, started a social media campaign and got a call from nissan, they didn't want to see their name smashed on facebook and twitter. Had great results from their executive team, they really cared about me, the main number there is 615-725-7000, best of luck.

Its not just this car. Almost all high performance cars have some sort of high failure rates for some part or another. Its all part of the game.

Even the new gt3 catches on fire. Hire a lawyer. You will probably win and more than likely attorney fees will be reimbursed by the arbitrator.

Update 5.30.2014

My dealer spoke with a supervisor over at Nissan security plus late last night to try to get an understanding from them. They told him that around 86k & 87k miles the car had several changes to the TCM. My dealer checked his records of my milage and those were the times that my car was in service when the Master Tech was working on my transmission issue. He sent them their paperwork of the car and milage to compare to the data that they have. When they see that it was all done at a Nissan dealership under warranty, they should replace it. I'll know more later this afternoon if they really want to be straight up assholes or not. If denied, this will end my relations with the r35. I love car, but not the people behind the warranty. I just can't support that.

No way man. This is a lemon issue. Same code several times? They should buy it back. You even had the forethought to buy the extra warranty. I'd be talking to a lawyer and mentioning it to the dealer.

UPDATE 5.30.2014

After a long grueling review of paperwork and data with Universal City Nissan and the Warranty engineers, the transmission will now be covered under warranty and will be replaced.

A big thank you to Universal City Nissan in California! They have been fighting this since August of 2013. They really came through and proved the warranty people that they were wrong.

Nissan Security Plus is a joke and should not be bought. They were so quick to blame and point the finger with really going through the whole data. All they want to do is deny claims to save them money. If they replaced the transmission back in November, they would have saved money in the long run, but they wanted to do everything else but.

Anyways... I still love the car, but after this whole experience, I'm thinking about putting the car up for sale. I just don't want to deal with Nissan anymore.

Lemon law on a car with 90k+ miles? Haha, good luck.

To the OP, looks like you have all your ducks in a row and the dealer will get it squared away. Once you get your new tranny i wish you another 100k of happy motoring!

Damn! Imagine getting it replaced through warranty if you had done Tune on it.

I don't get how some people with FBOs are claiming to be covered under warranty when it's clear that Nissan would void the warranty for any failure related to tuning.

UPDATE:

I hate the bring this news to you guys. NIssan is now voiding my warranty. The Security Plus Warranty people claimed to have sent someone out to look at my car and came back with this, "The car is 'heavily' modified and has been involved in closed circuit racing.

First off, my dealer told me that no one has even come out to inspect the car at all. Secondly, Nissan has hosted 2 GTR customer appreciation track days that I've been apart of in 2012(Laguna Seca) and 2013(Circuit of The Americas). Sounds crazy for a car manufacture to host a track day and then later deny your warranty because you tracked your car(at a Nissan event).

It's time for me to lawyer up.
