For my black 2015 BE, I just had my calipers powder coated Neon Yellow (Prismatic Powders) and added Fluorescent Yellow (eBay) 1/4" pin striping. The idea was to match the Porsche 918 Spyder's caliper color, which Porsche calls "Acid Green." The car looks very unique now and I love it!
The problem is the pin stripe vinyl keeps falling off on certain sections of the front and rear bumper. I'm no expert on how to install vinyl pin stripes so need help from the experts.
I made sure the car was clean (although I didn't try to strip the wax off of the car from when I waxed with Wolfgang Fuzion about 4 months ago.) I used just one long strip of the vinyl for the front and rear bumpers. When it comes to the curvy sections, I pulled the vinyl tight to stretch it out so that I could go around the curves without getting wrinkling. That technique worked out very well from a visual standpoint--no wrinkles. But the next day, some of the pin stripes had fallen off, I guess due to the tightness of the stretches, and the backing of the vinyl was still sticky enough for me to apply to the car again.
When the rear bumper gets warm from the exhaust, that causes the rear pin stripes to lose adhesion and fall off, too.
Is a better technique to lay the pin stripe without stretching it much and cut it at the spot where the stripe needs to curve, then apply a new strip?
I haven't had issues with the stripes on the side skirts coming off yet, but it's only time before they fall off too. I think that I could get some Gorilla clear tape to tape the ends of the stripes just on the inner wheel wells for the front and rear of the side skirts. I understand that this tape is water proof. Anybody have experience using this type of tape?
Also, I applied the pin stripes on the side mirrors as well. I applied them to the matte plastic area I hope that will stick. Is that where you guys apply it? The other option is to apply it on the painted portion of the side mirror (which I have covered in Xpel Ultimate).
Below are pictures of the pin stripes, after I had to reapply the curvy section on the front and rear bumper. After 10 minutes of driving, the front bumper and rear bumper curvy portion of the stripes starting losing adhesion, again. (The side skirt stripes and the stripe on the front bumper (bottom) stayed on with no issues after a drive.)
Again, I love the look of this vinyl. I searched everywhere online, and the only place that sold the color that most closely matches to my calipers was through a vendor on eBay. (But if anybody knows where else I can buy some 1/4" neon or fluorescent yellow vinyl, let me know.) . If this vinyl doesn't stick on while the car is dry, it must be even worse after I wash the car.
I'm wondering is there some kind of adhesive I can apply on the vinyl that won't damage my Xpel Ultimate (which my entire front bumper) and the plastic on the rear bumper and side skirts?
I've seen many GT-Rs on this forum who have added red pin stripes to match the NISMO look. What do you guys who have pin stripes do, to handle the curvy parts on the rear and front bumper? Do you guys have issues with the pin stripes losing adhesion, too?
