UPDATE - Service Campaign Started. Details in PDF file at bottom of post!
UPDATE2 - DIY GUIDE/FIX DETAILS POSTED - http://www.nagtroc.o...showtopic=39821

An increasing number of people are reporting incidents where their GT-Rs are not starting. There are a few impending warnings discussed (example: noises from the steering column when the car is started) and a few descriptions of the problem itself (examples: key doesnt seem to be recognized or gauge/key light coming on). The common trend though, seems to be that the car won't start and needs a steering wheel lock unit replaced.

This is not a small issue and needs to be addressed ASAP. It is unacceptable to have this many GT-R owners left stranded. The risks of this should be obvious - What if you need your car in an emergency? Or what if you go on a trip and stop for gas and have no cell coverage? A known issue like this should be addressed before it becomes a problem. We've seen a service campaign launch in Japan but as of yet, nothing has been done for the US.. despite the fact that there are clear cases of it happening here.

This issue warrants a dedicated master thread and sticky. Note that prior threads have been merged into this one. I would hope that Nissan will see this and at least issue a TSB, if not a voluntary recall. The issue should be fixed before it happens to owners that haven't seen it. Additionally, Nissan should be clear with owners who have seen it, whether or not their cars are truly fixed: We do not yet know why people are getting different part numbers (versions?) to replace the same failed part.

I've had the steering lock error several times. I just turn the steering wheel so it is not against the stops, then press the start button... Sometimes it is quite hard to hold it with one hand...

When it occurs in my car you can turn the wheel left & right about 1/2 inch. I hold the wheel in between the 2 stops with my left hand. I then press the start button with my right hand. The click is the wheel lock mechanism releasing.

Can you move it just a little to take the pressure off the lock mechanism? Just a little is needed...
It might be really hard to move. Sometimes I need two hands to initially move it. Then I can hold it with my left hand.

Would jacking the front wheels off of the ground help?

Hmmm. In your video I saw that you could turn the wheel left & right. But when you pressed the start button you were holding the wheel against the right stop.
Am I correct? Don't do that. Hold it half way in between the letf & right stopping points...

Also. I don't think you are having the same problem I have experienced. It seems that your wheel is easy to turn left & right.

The reason I have problems is because I turn the engine off then turn the steering wheel to lock it. Sometimes I have to turn it quite far which compresses the steering fluid & makes it hard to turn until it locks...

it wont turn any to the right. but it will move left so what your seeing is me pulling it all the way left then it going back the where its locked to the right. so it wont move right at all past where its locked

do i need to press the start button over and over or what?

Here is the text from the owners manual page 2-41.

STEERING LOCK RELEASE MAL-
FUNCTION INDICATOR
This indicator appears when the steering wheel
lock cannot be released from the LOCK posi-
tion. If this indicator appears, push the ignition
switch while lightly turning the steering wheel
right and left.
