Hey guys, how often do you change your oil? My father's GT-R doesn't get many miles put on it but he was concerned about how long the car should go before needing an oil change. Once every 6 months or so? He puts about 2k miles on it annually.

Thanks.

Nissan says every 6,000 miles or 6 months if the temp is kept below 230F.

I go for every 3k miles on just street use.   I did the first change sooner with a total of 3 changes after 8k miles.  IMO it is a relatively inexpensive thing to do so any time in the shop, I change it.  I am also slightly modded so I feel that shorter intervals are warranted.

There are different opinions on this.

Oil analysis has shown that there can be some value in changing oil more frequently in the early years.

Some owners will change oil about 500-1000 miles then every 3000 miles until the oil stabilizes in terms of breakdown products found in the oil. You can't easily tell but looking at it but the oil can be sent in for analysis. Then after about 12000-16000 miles you can probably change oil about every 3000-5000 miles depending on use.

The more you drive aggressively the more often you should change oil- roughly every 3000 miles is pretty safe and a small price to pay to protect the engine.

Nissan's 6 months or 6000 miles may be too long if you care about your engine or if you drive hard.

For low mileage GTRs only a little driving can also be hard on the engine- short trips especially are hard on components. If you father has low miles but will drive on the freeway at least 30-50 miles at a time then that would be good. If he only does about 2000 miles a year then every 6 months or even every 4 months would be a good interval. 6 months is likely to work, once a year seems too long depending on how hot or cold it might get outside.

^^^^This, with one caveat:

One change very early (approx 1000 miles total).

Then every six months. Like AutoXGTR said.

I change mine every six track days recently.  Every three thousand miles is probably a very good guideline for daily drivers.  1800 miles for track driving is also another good benchmark if you're using the Mobil-1 0W-40.
