I am wondering how many years before you would have to smog a new GTR in California (or a used one for that matter).  I know on a toyota prius it's 6 years.  Is it the same on a GTR?  If not, then what is the time frame?

Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles manufactured prior to 1998 or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older.

Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Owners of vehicles six or less model years oldwill pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV.

NOTE: Upon initial registration, nonresident, diesel powered vehicles manufactured in 1998 or after with a (GVWR) rating of no more than 14,000 lbs, and specially constructed vehicles 1976 and newer require smog certification. The six or less model years old  rule does not apply to these vehicles.

When you transfer a vehicle that is four or less model years old a smog certification is not required. (Determine the oldest-qualifying year model by subtracting three from the current year.) The four or less model years old rule does not apply to diesel powered vehicles. A smog transfer fee will be collected from the new owner . When a vehicle is more than four model years old, a seller must provide evidence of a current smog certification except when one of the following occurs:
  • The transfer occurs between a spouse, domestic partner, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or grandchild.
  • A biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).

Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance.

CA is a PITA. I was thinking it was 5 years so I guess I can have another year of fun with the DPs before swapping back on my '09.

Nice looking car in your sig!  You guys have too many hurricanes and bugs for me. :)  Although we are known as the "granola" state, since we are filled with nuts, fruits and flakes. :)

Dont even get me started on California. Just finished my taxes. I would go catless on the GT-R if the smell didn't bother me.

The IRS May send back my Tax Return
Perhaps it was because of my response to their questions: “List All Dependents”
I replied -filled the blanks in as:
* 12 million illegal immigrants
* 3 million crack heads
* 42 million unemployable people on food stamps
* 2 million people in over 243 prisons
* “535 fools in the U.S. House and Senate.”

;) corrected

And don't forget the stupid politicians as well.

I run a downpipe on my supra and have to put the cat back on every two years to get it smogged.  It's a pain, but the rest of the time it runs great without it (it runs fine with the cat as well) and is much more responsive and fast.  We can't own a lot of cool guns here either.

I love living in CA! I wouldn't live anywhere else.  I lived in the mid west for a year and have traveled all over the US, nothing like coming back to San Diego.

Why don't more people run an e cut out down pipe? You get the best of both worlds, power when you need it, and lower pollution and noise when you don't.

I was in CA for many years- moved out about 7 years ago.  I gotta say I'm happy I did.  The costs, regulations, crowding etc just got too much for me.  Montana has its own set of issues (winters suck!) but not nearly as serious as whats going on in CA.  It is unsustainable (see Optherion's post).  Anyway get that state fixed because it really has great weather.
