If this really is legit, I imagine the owner didn't want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a new engine, so they picked up an LS and plan on re-using a lot of the factory parts like turbos.

While the VR38DETT isnt a "cheap" engine to modify, it would certainly be more expensive to fabricate a LSx engine into a GT-R and produce enough power to make the swap worth while. Even if the GT-R had a blown engine before, replacing with a factory engine would still be cheaper then rigging up an LSx into the car. The VR38 also makes power a lot easier then a LSx does...

But to each their own...some people will always have a hard on for an LSx swap.

My guess is that they pulled the VR to build and had an LSx longblock in the shop. They then decided to "place" the LSX in the engine bay as joke. I can't imagine anyone would go to all the trouble and expense for a swap such as this. Just a guess though.

I think this is the most likely explanation - like the Subaru swap joke that someone posted here before.

That was me too lol, except that was a joke.. my friend who was working on my car sent me that subbie swap pic as a joke. This one is "probably" a joke too? I don't know the source.

Doubtful that GT-R is legit without seeing pictures of the drivetrain and how they made the transmission fit...  I've seen everything from Civics, to RX7's, to Volvo Wagons with LSx engines in them.  Here are a few of my favorites:
