This sunday at Aloha Stadium lower parking lot-

SCCA test and tune day from 8am to 4pm

Good for practice and seeing what the stock GTR can do using stock runflats.

Expecting lots of understeer. One of the magazine reviews mentioned-

Understeer plentiful which worsens with more throttle.
Risk of snap oversteer with exiting a corner.

Hopefully will get to learn how to drive the GTR better.

If it does rain, even better.

Can try manual or automatic transmission settings. Not expecting much out of manual, shift from 1st to 2nd then keep it there for the remainder of the course.

The best drivers/cars at autocross were getting 29.2 seconds

The best I could do with my stock GTR was 32.0 seconds. It was my first time at autocross in the GTR.

The best I could do with my other autocross car (MINI cooper S with Kumho V710 205/50-15 tires) was 31.0 seconds.

Corvette Z06 with Hoosier A6 tires got about 30.8 seconds

Evo X stock got 32 seconds.

Best settings for me were Manual 1st gear only, suspension on R mode and traction on R. Lots of understeer and some power oversteer.

Worst settings were manual in 1st and traction control off- got tons of wheelspin and rpms in the redline about 30% of the course.

I don't think the GTR is quite nimble enough for the tight turns of autocross but the straights can make up for that. Trouble is trying to keep speed up in the tight spots enough to enter a straight going fast (high enough rpms to get some torque).

The heavy weight is a big disadvantage.

What will it take to make upgrade adjustments?

19" wheels and Hoosier A6 tires
Front and rear adjustable sway bars
Maybe Cobb coilover sleeves lowering suspension one inch front and rear
Autocross alignment with more negative front camber and more toe out.

My plan was to wait until the GTR is officially classes into ASP.

Possible Competition in ASP for next season-
2001 Corvette
Another GTR with cat back exhaust
Acura NSX
Porsche 996
Consulier Raptor

Autocrossing is a bit rough and tumble. You drive like "a crazy man" as one competitor put it. Actually you drive on the verge of losing control but don't.

Having only 30 seconds you don't have the luxury of being "pretty". You have to go hard and take your chances to crash and burn around the course or lag behind the leaders.

Driving on the track is totally different. Going for 15 minutes or more doing laps takes it's toll on the tires and brakes so you can't be too hard on them for the early laps, you have to keep a bit reserved and conserve.

Autocross is so short it's tough to stress the car that much except when you have back to back runs with little rest- sometimes will happen at the end of the session when you have some reruns to do.

Tires will get hot on the outside not inside with autocross- so it's easy to overheat them a bit if you corner hard and they don't have enough time to cool off. Some drivers will bring water spray which they use as soon as they finish. I never do.

Tires are a huge benefit worth about 1 to 1.5 seconds per run of 30 seconds if you have R compounds. Still you have to drive well.

I did about 9 runs in the GTR. I started with about 33.679 seconds. An experienced Corvette driver drove the GTR in 32.478 seconds for the first time using 2nd gear in manual.
Last run and fastest time was 32.013 seconds. I also had a 32.09 run.

I'm looking for where to put magnets for race numbers and find-

magnets don't work for-

both doors
front and rear bumpers
hood
rear trunk lid
spoiler
mirrors

These are all non metallic surfaces.

Number will have to go on rear quarter panel behind doors.

Does this mean the doors won't dent quite so badly?

OK, come next month March 22 we may have two GTRs at autocross. apr270 and me. That starts the new season with 12 events on tap and one July Test and tune practice day.

Anyone else interested. wongcgtr ? GZire?

We will likely run stock until we commit to upgrades allowable in ASP class. Any increase of boost would mean Street Modified class.

apr270 gave it a try this past sunday and a few fun runs. He looked fine even though he hasn't been to autocross in some time.

What if we got four GTRs out there? It's really not bad. You just have to learn how to drive. Four runs each about 35 seconds or less if you can manage it.

No speed limit and you can knock over some cones without remorse although it would be better if you didn't. :irock:

more people with GTR's would be great. think it would be better to compete against the same car, just different drivers.

One idea is to keep the GTRs stock and drive in the same class. Only difference is driver skill. Sort of like a spec race event. Expect very small differences in time.
Only four runs so got to do well within that time. Doesn't matter if you do great with more practice. You'll have to make your adjustments quickly.

It is possible I could keep mine stock for now.

Competition in ASP class is an NSX on street tires and a Corvette on street tires. There are several porsches that might show up and one Raptor.

Are you thinking of coming by to watch or to drive?

If watching then here are some dates.
March 8 is season end run off in the morning and funruns for SCCA members in the afternoon
March 22 first event of new season
April 12 2nd event
July 12 3rd event
July 26 Test and tune day- just for practice all day long
Aug 2 4th event
Aug 16 5th event
Sept 20 6th event

If coming to drive then you need an SCCA weekend license or annual membership and show up at 730 am to walk up register for the event. Be prepared to drive after lunch in heat 3 or 4 and study the course and other drivers in the morning.

808_R35, your GTR is modded so you would be in Street Modified class if you did run. Usually 12 to 18 drivers and some good ones that finish in the top 5 for the day.

Great, maybe we can get wongcgtr to come too, he has come out once already for test and tune day.

If everyone shows we could have 4 or 5 GTRs out- very exciting even if you come to watch only.

On March 22 the GTRs in ASP class will drive after lunch so get there by 12 is best. If you do come early there will be some 50-60 cars driving in the morning and we will be walking the course at lunchtime as well as the early morning.

OK that would be great.

We do drive after lunch on March 22. If you come by anytime during lunch ask for me or any of the GTR owners. We can sign in a few extra people each to allow you to the pit and grid areas for a closer look.

You don't need to stay and can leave at any time.

Parking is $1 for the flea market area and proceed down to the lower parking lot area and there is a entry gate. Park and walk up and you can sign a waiver and have the gate person call for us. There is a wrist band for spectators but it is too far from the cars. We can get you another wristband for the drivers/pit crew.

For any driver that participated in last season you can pre-register for the March 22 event online-

http://www.sccahawaii.org/prereg/

Beginning about 10am and running through monday.

For all those that will be driving for the first time you need to do walk up registration about 730am that morning.

Bring a check for payment

Anyone wanting to get a discount on SCCA membership let me know so I can give you my number when you sign up. I think it is $15 off the annual fee.
Otherwise you can do a weekend membership for one event.

All GTRs are in ASP class and will need a race number 8" tall, you can print these on a white paper and tape them to your car.
Letters should be 4" tall.

You can reserve numbers for that class by telling the organizers. If it is not already reserved you can secure it.

Hope to see you there. We run in the afternoon after lunch about 1pm.

Autocross is tomorrow. Hoping to have at least two GTRs there maybe both running stock in ASP class.

Hope it rains. The runflats are fine in the wet and the drivers with R compounds will be slowed a bit- about 1 to 2 full seconds with any luck.

Runflats are better in the dry but not too bad in the wet.

Hope to see other GTR owners out there.

I will be there all day from 6am onward doing the set up.

After lunch we will walk the course a second time and then drive in heat 3.

If the weather is not bad we may have time for fun runs at the close of the day about 330pm to 430pm and if you have closed shoes you can find a helmet and ride along.

If you do come by ask for Brad in the GTR and I will try to get you in closer (pit and grid areas). Spectators are in a public area farther away from the cars.

still debating on the stock part.......

OK, we had three GTRs in the parking area and one new owner also present.

Two of us drove in ASP class vs two corvettes, one with street tires Toyo Proxes T1R and one with Hoosier A6 tires on 19" rims.

Apr270 took first
The Corvette with Hoosiers took second
I took third
The other corvette was fourth

Very nice day and got in a few practice runs at the close of the day.

Next event is April 12, hope to see you there.

The Stock GTR did OK. Not too horrible given-
Heavy weight
Heavy wheels and runflat tires
Understeer tendency

I think I need a lot more practice. I ran the stock tires with about 32 psi in front and rear. There was understeer in tight corners and oversteer on full throttle. With street tires you have to be careful not to overdrive and get into a corner too fast.

Top speed during the longer straights with a bend in it was about 55 mph and slaloms were about 32 mph with 20 paces separation

I had the status racing harness and it worked fine and was easy to install and remove.

Some people are saying that next season it may be moved to Super Stock class from ASP. SS class is very competitive so that won't be much of an improvement. The Honda NSX that usually comes out was not there. He'll need race tires to keep up. We sometimes will get a Porsche that comes out on street tires but he was not there.

We had some visitors from the mainland at the event. A husband and wife team that have won about 10 national championships in autocross each driving a Lotus. We offered to allow one of them to drive my Stock GTR at the event but they both declined stating that they didn't want to be responsible for any damage should an incident occur. Many of us were interested in seeing how they would do but it didn't happen.
