My journey to a car that runs! The Unintentional Build Thread

Hey everyone.

I'm a total newbie to the forum and to the platform and this is my unintentional build thread.

I come from the S4 and M3 world and decided to upgrade to the GT-R. Both great cars with cool history attached to them but time for Godzilla.

I bought my 2010 FBO GTR right here from the forum and have had quite a crappy go at it. Sight unseen proved costly.

A few hundred miles into enjoying my car and I lost my water pump and thermostat.
Right after that fix a few hundred miles later I noticed I was getting low oil pressure and some not so great noises from the engine.

I posted on the forums here for some help when I started to see the issue and got some great replies from the folks here so I appreciate that!

Doug @ WGP quickly jumped in to help as well and gave me a call. Doug ripped the band-aid off and gave it to me straight.... So - i shipped the car to Doug to have him take a look at it with 1 of 2 scenarios.

Scenario 1 - Pray for the best, small fixes, get car back to me for another couple hundred miles before it breaks again :)

Scenario 2 - Confirm the fears, Upgrade, rationalize the spend and begin my unintentional build.

After some weird shipping problems (just a truck burning down and stuff) the car safely arrived at WGP.

Doug and the team went to work quickly and let's just say the only things I feel we are keeping are a seat belt and my air freshener.

Nothing about this car was good:

- Transmission had funky parts and serviced incorrectly
- Front Tires were fake Michelin's (which we enjoyed a good laugh at) and caused me some ETS woes.
- Bolts missing everywhere -- just nightmares all over the place.
- Oh and the engine was shot - if oil touched it then it needed replaced.  Awesome.
  - My recent WP and TSTAT service at Nissan could have been an issue (my oil pickup tube was clogged and my main seal spring was nesting in there)

Doug could always explain more or clarify but we call it a turd in a pretty bow.

Enough about the problems.. let's get to the build!!!!!

Doug has recommended a build that will net me in the area of 1000WHP and 800ish WTQ.

I'm going to ask Doug to provide a write-up of what we are doing since the build got a bit more complicated and my parts list doubled..

Thanks for all of the forum support and stay tuned!....
and Thank you to Doug @ WGP for helping me with this mess.

To be continued...

Its a bunch of bearing material, silicone, radiator stop leak, and what appears to be the tension spring from a front main seal.

You may be able to sell the block if it isn't windowed.

And the trans part should probably say DBA upgrades.

I'm curious why those cams were chosen.

Thx for the feedback.

I'd have to defer to Doug on the cams. Just taking his guidance as we go through the process.

Yeah - i was already teetering on the SHEP decision but then once we opened the car up I had to choose.. but no doubt the mod bug is slowing planting itself deeper into my brain.

So who did you buy it from here on the forums?  This sounds like a really shitty deal you got handed.  How many miles were on the car?  There must be a story here.  I really hate to hear something like this.  You spend all this money on a car and now tens of thousands more to fix it.  That just pisses me off.

Good luck on the build.  I think you are in good hands at this point.

Thanks.  Definitely sucks and in hindsight should have done a bit more research so I just put it on myself and will just leave it at that.  But Doug's doing right by me, he's been super great so far and has gone above and beyond for me already so I'm just excited to get back a properly built car.

I think this is an example of the risks of buying a FBO E85 car.  You just never know what abuse the car has taken, or what shape it's in, or how long it will last until problems start.

You have a great attitude for what you've been going through.

Nice build overall. Always get a PPI, compression test, leak down, etc. My seller didnt want me to get a PPI, kept stalling. Turns out the trans cooler was leaking. I couldnt pull myself away from the car though.

Why the Procom kit? I assume you are aiming for 1000hp/800tq?

Yeah - lesson learned... I've purchased quite a few cars like this online and never had an issue but looks like it caught up with me :)

Doing the Procom kit on the advise of Doug. Perhaps he can chime in, maybe he just seen good results in this HP range..   And yes going for 1100/1200HP with 800/900tq  -- whatever Doug can squeeze out the car.
