Wow, such a tragic story!  I always liked Kobe.  If Shaq would have kept in shape, they could have won two or three more rings.

This just shows us all how fragile life is.  RIP Kobe, his daughter and the others that were on the helicopter.

He always took a helicopter or jet from his home to LA for games.  I don't think he ever drove to work.  Must be nice to have that much money.

He did a good deal for the community and around the world. Genuinely nice guy and will be missed. Was just getting started on the next chapter in his life and would have been epic if he just put in half the work he did for the Lakers. RIP.

Still trying to wrap my head around this tragic event from a Kobe fan perspective, as well as, from a parent of two young girls that have me wrapped around their fingers.  Too, too unreal!

Now I'm hearing reports that one of the towers was communicating with the pilot and said, "you are still flying to low for the area you're in" (paraphrasing).  Which make me believe that #1- pilot was lost in the fog due to spatial disorientation, #2- pilot was handling mechanical emergency, or both.  Last telemetry reported showed the helicopter hitting the ground at 185mph and descending at a rate of 4K ft/sec.

Anyway, all this information will not bring anyone back.  :(

Sad news. It’s always sad to hear about kids dying in accident like this one.
RIP
Probably damage or CFIT.
4k ft/sec of vertical speed is impossible in this case. 4k ft/minute is more realistic.

Helicopters go down all the time.
Would almost bet there are over 100 crashes a year easily.
I took a trip to Connecticut in 2016 with a smaller Helicopter.
These machines (esp. the smaller ones) are very very sketchy. You can feel every little vibration . Before boarding one you should def. be aware this could be it.
As we were flying over the rural areas it just doomed me how big the U.S really are. Most civilization is in the big east and west coast cities, other than that it's the dark age.
People up there are living in wood cabins.
I thought what would happen if we crash and survive. Because there is nothing but woods for 100s of miles, it prob. would be hard to survive this any scenario possible.

Big factor in these crashes are human errors.
Look up Air France Flight 447 if you're interested what happens if you have a noob in the cockpit.

And Kobe took Helicopters all the time, so the law of averages is more likely to catch up with you.

It was amazing to watch his life from the time he was drafted and traded to the Lakers at 17 until he retired 20 years later.  He had his faults, but don't we all.  Overall , he lived a good life and helped many people as well.

Correct, that was my typo.  4,000ft per minute, which equates to roughly 45mph of vertical speed.

I know he always flew.  But come on.  It was Sunday, low traffic.  The drive would have taken maybe an hour and a half, which is not bad for L.A. standards.  Besides, it was foggy as sh!t.  I've flown in those conditions with young officers behind the yolk through the mountains of Santa Barbara and it was not fun.   Anyway, it is done.

Death is a funny thing.  It affects different people in different ways.   Just like how other people are perceived by others - be it friends, family members, sports icons, or members on a car forum.

Ignore the fake trolls
