I ordered the Speed By Design wireless carplay kit... but it didn't come with any instructions on how to install. Eventually figured it out but front camera not working or I dont know how to access it. Also, I need to figure out how to make it start automatically in CarPlay audio...

Anybody else that has this knows?

Have you tried contacting SBD yet?

Just discovered this kit the other day on Evan Shanks YouTube channel. Only works with DBA radio, but I was surprised to see even touch input works. I was thinking of giving it a try. Looks like it has a plug and play harness but instructions on disassembling dash would be nice.

Here is a video showing a little of the install and a demo but it would have been better if they didnt cut away during install.

Please let us know how the instructions you get work out for you and your impressions of the unit once installed.

I also found another cheaper kit from the The Shop Houston with various camera options. Not sure which I will go with but this one states its made in the USA and it shows the wiring connectivity right on the product page. Maybe its similar to your unit?

Funny, I found that after I ordered mine. I think they're pretty similar, just by looking at it. It does look like maybe the Houston one requires some cutting/splicing? It also looks like you have to have a separate mic, the SBD one just uses the mic already in the car. Mine came with what I thought was going to be front camera, but actually is a dash cam. I talked to Chris at SBD about it, might have to switch that up. Either way, I would actually call both places to make sure you order EXACTLY what you need. I didn't know I had options, and had read good things about SPD on the forum, so just ordered his.

Let me know what you end up doing.

Check out this video on the SBD unit. At 4:20 he shows how to setup the front camera. He also mentions harness had front camera mislabeled.

In the few videos I have seen so far of the SBD device, it looks like there is some lag on the CarPlay touch input and the animation seems jittery at times. He pushes things at least twice before it responds. Evans video appeared that way too. Does yours lag like this? Still nicer functionality than stock though and better navigation.

I am kind of leaning toward the Houston shop device because it doesnt appear laggy in these videos. Turn signal cams are nice too. I am glad to see these awesome new aftermarket options for our cars. Both look promising.

My touchscreen isn't laggy or jittery, and it responds immediately when I touch it, so it may be that guy's screen. I unfortunately have to rewire mine to replace the dash cam with a front camera, so that's a little annoying.

The turn signal camera is def interesting. So anytime you use your turn signals it goes to that particular side cam?

Glad to hear yours doesnt have any lag.

Yes the shop Houston CarPlay kit includes options for front cam and side turn signal activated cameras. I believe it knows turn signals are activate from the CAN bus. Not sure how front cam turns on. Very cool feature but probably a pain to run each of the cables. Hopefully it can be done without fully removing dash. I also wonder if it supports birds eye view when you have 4 cameras.

I suspect that shop Houston CarPlay is wired Carplay and not wireless like SBD. I think shop Houston CarPlay model is made by NavTool

I have the SBD Carplay integration.  I love the wireless Carplay option since there isn't enough room in the GTR to nicely hold a phone.

I have been using Waze, spotify and more with no issues.

What are the Android users here using?  Seems like both are wired and about the same price once you add the screen mirroring option for the Shop Houston module

Isnt SBD the same as Houston? Just the splash is different, but the board is pretty much the same? Arent they both wireless when it comes to syncing CarPlay?

I heard there was some sort of beef with both parties, and Houston bought out all the same boards from the same supplier SBD uses in China and is selling it for cheaper? So that is why I am asking

No, they are not the same. The Shop Houston is selling a NavTool unit, while SBD sells a Chinese unit made by Lsailt (they have a storefront on aliexpress).
No, they are not both wireless, only Lsailt one is.
You heard wrong.

I’m using the NavTool CarPlay kit from the Shop Houston, and it works flawlessly. The front camera option has already saved my carbon front countless times. I preferred the wired kit as it also charges my phone when using CarPlay. If most manufacturers are using a wired kit, that should tell you something. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thank you for the clarification. I only ask because my goal is to mirror ecuTek to the display. Seems they have CarPlay support for the app? Or potentially jailbreak with like CarBridge for iOS devices. https://carbridgetweak.com/

Anyone else been using the SBD kit? Any problems?
Im interested just want to make sure it isn't buggy. Kinda surprised there isn't much talk about it considering how popular carplay/andriod auto is.

Top speed runs are killers no matter how well the car is set up.

Just wanted to let those interested know that I installed the wireless carplay from speed by design last weekend. great unit, install was a bit easier than i thought and all plug and play. Enough room for the box behind the controller panel. It definitely works smooth enough and no real lag. Actually, it's a lot more than just wireless play, it's basically an android computer which bypasses all stock radio stuff. So it really has endless possibilities. Definitely worth the upgrade. came with a dash 1080p camera that i'm still sorting through. But overall a real good solid unit.

Thank you, adds reassurance!

Can anyone comment on firmware/kernel revisions... is this hardware adaptable to iOS patching? Obviously I dont recommend being on beta platforms but curious how support is and how quickly it can be patched to fix any bugs.
