AC Issue

I have a 2012 GTR and the AC started blowing warm air.  I had the system recharged, and that seemed to help a little, but it still would run cold and then warm.

 

I found out one of the previous tuners (either SP Engineering or Doug Ross) had put too much oil in the system and tool much coolant as well.

 

My current shop thought this may have caused an issue with the AC compressor.  So I changed that out, but I'm still having the same issue.  It will blow cold and then it will blow warm.  Sometimes on start up it blows warm, and after I stop and restart the car, it will blow cold.  Other times it blows cold as soon as I start to drive it.

 

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Sorry to hear, as I’m only aware of a handful of guys that had the compressor go. Sounds like you have some air in the system. I’d recommend vacuuming the system and then recharge it and check for leaks. Have a feeling you’ll be fine.

You need to hook up a set of gauges to see if your low side and high side pressures are in the acceptable range based on ambient temps.  When the air is blowing warm you can visually check to see if the compressor clutch is engaged, which if not would indicate a system pressure issue.  Randomly changing stuff is not the correct approach so it all starts with hooking up the pressure gauges. 

 

When I was restoring my daughter's 83 Porsche 928 I got tired of paying people to get the AC dialed in so I purchased a vacuum pump from Harbor Freight and some gauges off Amazon.  Watched some video's on YouTube and I was an AC expert. :lol:  Got the Porsche AC going strong and I also did the AC work on my GTR when I did the turbo swap.  The attached pic is me pulling a vacuum on the system for 1hr before charging, which was after I pressure checked the system.

Too much coolant will show up with the pressure gauges and that is an easy fix by releasing coolant, but not knowing how much oil in the system is a bit more tricky.  Most of the oil typically remains in the compressor, but the oil is designed to be carried by the freon throughout the system, which is why you choose the oil that is compatible with the freon.  New compressors often come prefilled with the correct amount of oil, but you would need to know that prior to adding more oil.  Too much oil can cause the system to become inefficient and the only real way to know how much oil you have is to drain it all out and refill from scratch and this would likely require that you remove the compressor unless it has a drain.

 

When I did my turbo swap I had a shop empty the freon into his machine because it also measured how much oil was removed.  When I recharged the system I just added back that amount of oil to the system the shop removed. With the Porsche, since I rebuild the compressor and replaced all the orings, I started from scratch and filled the compressor with the recommended amount for an empty system.

The amount of oil in the system was way too much.  Like 10 times too much.

If that is true it is not good so you need to do a flush because the oil will be everywhere. Not sure how easy it is to flush, but it can be done after a quick search.
