In Topic: Advice on what or what not to buy for a used GT-R

20 June 2020 - 05:56 PM

Hey,

I'm in Ontario, and here's my 2 cents.

I'd suggest being cautious about buying a second hand GTR at a used car lot, other then an authorized Nissan GTR dealer.

Some of the reasons why,

You dont know what your getting.

Nissan will cherry pick, and keep lease returns. The junk, modified, trashed, or carproofs that are 6 pages long with more owners then jenna Jamieson usually end up at used car lots, picked out from auctions, or wholesaled because noone wanted it.

I viewed tons of GTRs in the Toronto area, and they were ALL HARD PASSES..Condition, tinkered with, etc..

I'd be cautious if the car has been modified, and returned to stock and running right.

I waited patiently, took me years before I found one. Eventually bought privately from an owner in his mid 50s, retired philanthropist who had more money then god. Lol. Felt very comfortable buying it from him. Actually flew out of province. Car is like new (2012 model)

Goodluck buying one. Dont rush it. I'd suggest buying private. That way, you see who your dealing with.

This is why I never buy brand new cars too.. I'm way to OCD. The first scratch, and I'd be in the garage oooogling it for hours.

Been there, done that. Lol

This thread reminds me of when I picked up my GTR, and drove 1000 miles home. Check out the pic. People thought I was insane.

I stopped driving @3am in Quebec, stayed at a hotel and slept for a few hours.. guy at front desk asked me what kind of Ferrari it was, hes never seen this car before.

Personally, If you daily drive the car, and go on highways, and are exposed.. WRAP IT.

This car to me is a toy, and I dont use it for daily driving. I avoid highways, and I dont follow closely.. I'm usually the first in the pack. My car has 24k miles. The front end looks new, along with the lip.

I wish the wraps were cheaper. 2k for a bumper, hood, and partial fenders.. for plastic ?? Hmm..

In Topic: Downshifting, good or bad?

03 June 2020 - 11:20 PM

The vehicle will downshift into 1st itself , i wouldn't throw it in first manually while cruising at speeds above 5mph.

Prolonged engine breaking could ONLY be a bad thing if it went on for a really really long period, enough for the oil temps to decrease lower than normal operating temps and for engine parts to become too cool. But the time it would take for that to happen is several minutes, like 10-20 minutes of engine breaking.

In no way is engine braking harmful. All OEM's deactivate fuel injection once throttle plate is commanded closed via the pedal position to improve fuel economy. During engine braking, the engine is acting as a giant airpump driven by vehicle momentum. The loads on the driveline and engine are significantly less than during WOT.

Hopefully this helps.

The GTR is engineered to be driven.
