Cars under 40k?

So I've had my Camaro for a little over a year now and since school has started I'm daily driving it to and from school everyday, but the problem is the gas mileage. My avg mpg is whopping 9 mpg and with the car getting so many little problems my family and I have decided trading in the SS for something else. So I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on a car under 40k, preferably a car that I could track (that is good for a 1st timer), something that gets better than 9 mpg, has 4 seats, and it can be used or new. I was looking at some older 996 turbos and M3s. So what would you guys recommend.

How about a new STi or Evo. 4 doors, 4 seats with enough room for a daily driver. MPG will not be great but definitely better than your camaro's 9 mpg.

I actually like the STi, but how good is it on the track, and I heard Evos have a lot of maintenance is that true?

I have actually heard subaru's are pretty bad reliability wise.
If you want to track Evo no question, I owned a Evo since they came out in 2003 and got a IX in 2006 that I recently sold to get the GTR. Both cars were making 150hp + more than stock and each had about 20 track days a piece and I never once broke anything. The Evos will make more power more realiably than the STi's. As for maintenence its the same as every track car, about $5-600 for tranny diff and engine oil change.

another vote for MITSU EVO , mine is still the fastest car ive ever had.
You might be able to score a standard Mustang Boss 302 for under $40K. It's MSRP was $40K and only the Laguna Seca versions were seeing a big markup. The Boss 302 is not a normal Mustang, is fast as heck and is a great track car from what I have read...

It may be too early to find one under MSRP but it'll happen soon.
Get a used NSX, better mileage, looks sexy and its a Honda.

Thanks for the responses and I really love the 302 and the NSX, but they are both only two seats, I need atleast 4.
I'm still quite fond of E46 M3's for this price range. Great performer on the track and extremely easy to drive daily as well.

Yea what you heard is not correct. There are very few issues with Subarus but Evo's are alot worse.

So STi or Evo! They're both good! What do you guys think about 2008 Evo MR, it has dual clutch, and seems like a good car?
STI, EVO and Mustangs are kids cars.

Get an E55, SL55, E46 M3, 996 TT, Z06 et et

If you plan on modding I woudlnt, they are limited to about 320wtq because of the tranny. The CT9A's (8 & 9) are a lot more raw and vicseral, where as the X's are more refined and dull.
The MR has tranny cooling issues if you track hard and the manual (as I'm finding out) has a weak 3rd gear syncro... I'm working on it

However, I still love it... The evo is just sharper and more focused than the sti and around here at least, less common. The evo for me is just connected... The steering is the best I've driven outside the gt3 rs. It's a great track car, I daily drive it, my daughter rides in it, can be driven in bad weather... I average 18-19mpg... About 3 mpg on track... Maybe less lol
huge plus one for the sti. We race our 06, it fits four normal sized people (although admittedly I wouldn't road trip in it) and flies through snow, gravel, and dirt. It and the other subarus my friend and family own have been quite reliable. And if you do need to replace anything you can have a great aftermarket performer part installed for cheap and just claim its a modification and not a repair haha.

we get good milage as well, depending on how you drive it of course. 9MPG is quite the low bar in this category anyway.
although not a BMW fan, it's hard to be a used E46 M3 in the under $40K category. Depending on what you want to do, I'd even say maybe go back to an E36 as a fully dedicated track car. You'd save a bunch of $s, be able to really gut it and have enough left over to buy a trailer for it. The fun factor between the two is arguable, but my bet is a stripped E36 track car would be more fun than a dual-purpos E46 driver/track car.

The Boss 302 has back seats. Only the Laguna Seca version has two seats...
