With my car when I run it in R mode I don't get any faster times or better trap speeds than when the car is in just plane M mode and let it shift for itself or in full auto mode. R mode is useless for me....

BUT for me to get my best times and highest trap speeds the secret is to NOT shift at redline ;)

It all depends on your dyno and torque curve.

Auto here - have not tried manual - car runs consistently between 11.10 and 11.15 in fall weather which I like - plan to keep my '12 stock for now - very pleased

But only ran at the strip once, and then only two runs due to crowding and lack of time.

Later I'll try manual at the strip, but had some early experiences (on closed road) with running into Redline, so I'm a bit leary until I get it down right.

Oh nm this is the drag strip forum... Why don't you call is "the strip" instead of "the track" ? Confused me when I am looking at new posts...

Cannot understand how someone can drive with auto. I even use Manual in normal traffic. When I drive harder, i use manual... always...
"Driving" is a matter of personal preference. Not hitting the Rev limiter in 1st gear with manual at the drag-strip (not a problem with higher gears) with everything else competing for your attention, CAN be an issue...until you get used to it. Perhaps that helps the "understanding."

if your just concered about the 1st gear rev limiter...

for a 2012 GTR you can actually do both.... you can launch it in auto have it shift to 2nd in auto then then grab the paddle for 3rd and it will instantly go to manual and shift the rest of the run yourself..... i found this out by accident when i forgot what mode i was in and it actually turned out to be my best run of the day

previous models dont stay in R mode when switching from auto to manual

You're right MC...BUT, the advantage in manual (running a higher shift-point than auto) would twice be lost:

Once, from 1st to 2nd gear (where you left it in Auto for reasons explained)

Secondly, the first time you shifted Manually, it would HAVE to be shifted before Auto shifted itself...losing more RPM, probably from 2nd to 3rd.

After that, I agree 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th would be in Manual mode.

Better is to continue to use Auto until the 1st to 2nd gear Manual shift can be made reliably, just under Redline. (and I'm not there yet)

Put the car in Manual. Instead of "R,R,Off", set it to "Don't Touch, R, Off" Launch it. The car will shift at redline every time even though it is in manual mode. I was at a private track day with 7 GTRs this weekend and it worked for everybody.
