if your just concered about the 1st gear rev limiter...
for a 2012 GTR you can actually do both.... you can launch it in auto have it shift to 2nd in auto then then grab the paddle for 3rd and it will instantly go to manual and shift the rest of the run yourself..... i found this out by accident when i forgot what mode i was in and it actually turned out to be my best run of the day

You're right MC...BUT, the advantage in manual (running a higher shift-point than auto) would twice be lost:
Once, from 1st to 2nd gear (where you left it in Auto for reasons explained)
Secondly, the first time you shifted Manually, it would HAVE to be shifted before Auto shifted itself...losing more RPM, probably from 2nd to 3rd.
After that, I agree 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th would be in Manual mode.
Better is to continue to use Auto until the 1st to 2nd gear Manual shift can be made reliably, just under Redline. (and I'm not there yet)
