Does anyone know what part an "All Wheel Coupler" Is

Got a call for Nissan North America and explained that there is a part called the "All wheel coupler" that connects the rear wheel and the front wheel drive, and that an increase in the engine boost (ie tune) pushes the transaxle beyond the limit it was designed. This sounds a little strange as I have never heard of a coupler in the GTR.

The ATTESA clutch pack is directly driven off the front of the transmission shaft. There is no real traditional coupler like a chain or the like. The front drive is controlled though the lockup of the clutch in this assembly.

The only real way I can see that you will damage it would be for it to start slipping. Other than the normal circlip type things.

Or to shear the shaft end off, like on the Cobb GT-R in the rain.

Was that related to the circlip failing? I can't see just shearing that shaft, although I have seen some odder things.

On an R33 sheared the mainshaft of the trans on a launch. Customer out in Arizona. The trailered car that I towed out there, I drove back, put the customers car on the trailer. 400 miles, in the rain, on drag radials.

Don't know. The shaft broke off just at the splines. I don't know if the circlip broke too. They had a video of when the car went 2wd and how bad it was. I remember a photo of the sheared driveshaft.

That is my picture, off my blog, that I took out at a time attack one day. Talking to the guys, they think that it failed because a few days before, Samuel Hubinette was doing donuts in their car. Never seen one fail like that since. Its a bit of an oddity.
To the OP, didn't your cluncking go away after changing out your fluids? Either way, that sounds like a hokie explanation. There are a lot of cars running tunes and yours is the first I have heard of this. How can they even make a diagnosis if none of them has physically looked at your car? While it is likely the problem they suggest would throw any codes, as you experienced, I would think that this part would have failed you on your most recent track outing if that was indeed the case.

Regarding the Cobb car, I talked with Brian Lock after this happened. There was no circlip problem. The front shaft just twisted off. He didn't mention the part about someone else doing donuts in the car previously, however.

Funny. Don't you hate it when people pull your own stuff to remind you? Happened to me before too.

Not really. It means they were paying attention, and could find it for reference. I get so much information, that I can't possibly remember it all. I have to have notebooks, and notebooks of notes. Lots of saved files, websites, and picture albums. I spend a good amount of time organizing it all, and I still have issues finding things on my own sites at times.

I have a stupid amount of Nissan Skyline GT-R information, books, magazines, and even spare squirreled away parts. Lots of odd and unique parts that you can't buy or are hard to find.
