hello!

i have a question, and i hope that maybe someone with knowledge on the subject can give me an answer:

do duckbill trunks have any affect on aerodynamics, positive or negative?

some people have told me that it's all aesthetic and has zero impact on the vehicles aero, and others have told me that it will have a negative affect. any insights on this would be appreciated.

thanks!

There have been several threads on this very same question in the past- bottom line was (if my memory serves me correctly), that our OE wings are for the most part aesthetic but do create downforce incrementally above, somewhere in the neighborhood of, 125mph+/-. The duckbills were found not to create downforce but were also found not to adversely effect rear stability either so they are... for the most part, completely aesthetic. Now all of this said, theres another wing that extends flat and flush-directly off of the rear trunk lid and you'll see these on many of the quicker GT-R 1/4 mile cars- these wings have been found to actually help manage and merge the flow of air over the trunk lid past the rear of the bumper and from under the car.. streamlining the turbulents associated with drag. They dont look real pretty but they are said to be quite functional helping to reduce 1/4 times. Im certain that others will chime in but if you dig around here a bit more, youll likely find other similar past discussions arriving at a similar bottom line.

Stock OEM wing does create lots of downforce ........ The GTR has a drag Coefficient of .26 so what we really have here is millions of dollars of wind tunnel testing. Downforce without drag , the GTR was the first supercar to ever achieve these results...

It shape was controversial .......... but fast...

Other cars FYI were 458 - .36, 911 TT - .39 , so Nissan did its homework..........
