Ok, so you own a GTR but do you know how to drive it at it's limit?

Well, find out how good you really are and for $250 each day you can drive it with a personal instructor.

Even if you don't have any desire to do competition driving you will learn car control and find the limits of your car or your skills.

SCCA Hawaii for the second year is sponsoring the EVO driving school for three days on the weekend of Jan. 19-21, 2013

Each day is full of excitement. Instructors are top notch national class SCCA drivers with years of experience instructing.

No prior track experience necessary, build on the skills you have already.

Description of classes- Phase 1 and 2, Challenge (you take them in order)
http://www.evoschool...hp?page=classes

Evolution Performance Driving School and the Hawaii Region of the SCCA will be holding Phase 1 and 2 classes and a Challenge School at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, HI. These programs are great for drivers who are ready to take their driving to the next level. This driving school features three different courses, with Evolution's team of National Level instructors. Do you think you look ahead? Well we'll find out in phase 1 and 2, and in session three it's game on, as this school pits student against instructor in a head to head battle. So, do you think you are up for the Challenge?

For Directions to the site, please go to: http://alohastadium.hawaii.gov/directions
The following is a schedule for the days event:
  • 8:30am Drivers Meeting
  • 8:50am Instructed Sessions Begin
  • 12:15pm Lunch
  • 1:00pm Instructed Session Continue
  • 4:30pm Wrap-up Meeting
Those that are looking to get the most seat time possible may want to consider our Saturday Phase One and Sunday Phase Two as well!
For more information on this, as well as other Evolution schools, please feel free to contact Mike "Junior" Johnson at: junior@evoschool.com

You can use any car that is not a rollover risk. Snell rated helmets needed M2005 or later but there are some rentals if you don't have one.
Street tires are fine but some cars will be on race tires.

To sign up-
http://www.evoschool.com/index.php?page=schedule&&start=10

These classes are first come first served so don't delay. If a class does fill up please still sign up to be on the alternate list.

There are no spectators at this event unless you are with a participant

Time to reserve a spot for all those Hawaii drivers that want to learn about performance driving.

No need to go to the mainland to take a course when you can get it for the same price offered there- $250 per day per person.

No you can't ride along, only students and their instructors in the cars.

So far after about one week, registration is half filled for each day.

Don't miss out.

If you are interested in the EVO driving school I will be at Cars and Coffee 9/9

#6 ·
Don't forget to sign up soon for the Evo Driving school in Hawaii

Limit of 30 students per day

#7 ·
There is still room on each day to sign up.

#9 ·
There are loaner helmets but it is better if you have your own or can borrow one that is SNELL rated M2005 or later or SA2005 or later.

Hope you can make it.

#10 ·
Still room left for each day.

#11 ·
Still openings left to sign up.

Novice drivers on day one, intermediate to advanced on the other two days.

#12 ·
Almost December! , give yourself a treat for christmas and sign up for the EVO driving school in January 2013.

Cheaper than traveling to the mainland and staying in a hotel for the same event, plus drive your own car.

#13 ·
Tired of driving the speed limit?, Tired of cops hiding in the bushes and around corners waiting for you?

Don't you want to see what your GTR can do?

Then sign up for the EVO driving school January 19-21 at Aloha Stadium.

Drive as fast as you can without hitting the cones that line the course with instructors to help. Each class lasts all day.

Novice drivers start with the first day, once completed can then move to the next day.

Signups not yet filled and are first come first served but there is a limit for each day.

Instructors are from the Mainland and are experienced national class drivers in SCCA.

Still time to sign up for this event.

That's great news. I think you will enjoy yourself.

Which day(s) did you sign up for? I will be there each day.

Bringing the GTR? How are your tires? I think you have relatively newish tires.

In any event get enough rest the night before and drink lots of fluids that day. Have an open mind for what the instructors are trying to teach.

Tomorrow is an autocross. I drive after lunch. If it is not too rainy there may be time for funruns at the end of the day about 330pm.

I drove right after lunch about 1 pm.

Many tight turns along the course and one fairly wide spaced four cone slalom.

If you drop by just let the gate person know to call me and that you are a GTR owner.

I did a few fun runs at the end of the day on street tires. It was fairly dry.

Anyone else thinking of signing up for the Evo Driving school in Hawaii?, there are still three open spots for Day one, five for Day two and, more open for Day three.
You have to complete day one before attending day two. You can sign up directly online but don't delay, it's first come first served until each day is full.

Still time to sign up for Evo school in Hawaii. Each day is still open but might close soon.

Bring your other car or your GTR, doesn't matter.

Only a few days left before the Evo school this weekend.

Tomorrow night get a good night's sleep is very important. Maybe Friday night you will be excited and find it hard to sleep.
Over the weekend get to bed early to be rested for the next day.

GZire and I attended course 1 of the Evo School today. Weather was good, we learned a lot. Most drivers saw their times drop consistently over the day.

Tomorrow, Course 2 and things get more interesting.

Very good instructors this year, 5 from the mainland.

Day 2 for Evo school, did pretty well, good weather, a bit windy.

But unlike course 1 that was more basic and was the same all day, course 2 had four different courses to practice on and some of them we drove without walking. Had to drive and learn on the fly.

Another day tomorrow. Much to absorb each day.

Day three of Evo school- the challenge day.

More reinforcement of the skills learned the first two days. Then we got to tape up our front windshields so that we could not see the 25 feet in front of our cars then we drove on a course that we did not previously walk or drive using only looking ahead and peripheral vision to guide us and not hit cones along the course. Surprisingly some drivers adapted and drove really well, hitting only one cone out of about 5 runs while still driving fast.

At the end of the day you get to drive your best time in your car then let the instructors have a go at it in your car to beat your time. It's a way to gauge your skill level compared to a national class driver- many of the instructors have past National championship titles if not years of competing at that level plus years of instructing at the Evo School across the country.

It's good to know that your car isn't holding you back. It's not like the next upgrade you have planned is going to make as much difference as improving your own driving skill.

And it's good to have enough car control skill to keep you out of trouble when you are driving whether on the street or at the next driving event of your choice.

For any GTR owners in Hawaii there is a potential opportunity to drive with instruction on a safe closed course.

SCCA Hawaii may be planning to save a date in early July when the new season starts off for Test and Tune and autocross instruction at Aloha Stadium.
The course will be essentially the same as one of our autocross events running about 0.4 miles long lasting about 40 seconds or less. Speeds up to about 55 or as fast as you can drive.

Since it is not a competition day it doesn't matter if you hit cones so it's just for practice and learning. Instructors will be available all morning. You can try out different approaches or even drive other cars (with owner's permission).

Cost is the same as any autocross event. $35 for members, $50 for non-members (includes weekend membership)

OK, dust off your driving shoes and helmet and get your GTR ready for------

The Evolution driving school at Aloha Stadium lower parking lot sponsored by SCCA Hawaii Region on January 17, 18, and 19 2015.

This is very similar to the past three day school in 2013, likely each day there is a limit of 30 students with about 5 instructors with national championship experience.

GZire attended last time on street tires and did very well.

Price is not yet determined but will be about the same as last time roughly $280 per day.

Each driver averaged about 24+ runs per day so that is about 6 months worth of competition driving in one day.

You don't need a GTR to attend, you can bring any sedan, nothing with a high risk of rollover. Even a rental car will work fine.

Emphasis is on car control and working on your "precision" driving skills.

Tell your friends and come out together. SCCA weekend membership of $15 will work for all three days.

You'll need closed shoes and a SNELL rated helmet M2000 or later.

Hope to see you there in 10 months.

We are in the planning stages for what to do each day for the upcoming January Evo Driving School event for 2015. We don't often see experienced instructors of this caliber in Hawaii so be sure not to miss this opportunity. There are no spectators, just drivers.

We are considering getting some dealership sponsors to reduce the cost for participants, if we do that will be even better.

Right now we are looking at Day 1 Phase 1 course for novice drivers or as a refresher course, Day 2 Phase 2, requires completion of Phase 1, an intermediate level course using various track layouts to practice driving skill. Day 3 an open Test and tune day with limit of 30 drivers with Evo School instructors available, a very heavy driving day and opportunity to try new things/ideas.

I would expect to see a few Corvettes participating and with as many as 20 rookie drivers in our recent autocross events, good participation with Phases 1 and 2. This will be a first come first served sign up using online Evolution School registration. I would expect reg to open in a month.

You don't need race tires to participate, this is all about driving skill. A stock GTR will do fine, why not see what your GTR can do (for a change). Hope to see you there.

That's great, now try to convince a few more GTR owners or even your non GTR friends to come along. We are not likely to sponsor having an Evo School much more often than every two years.

No way that people who drive powerful cars know enough to keep themselves out of trouble unless they get a chance to practice driving at the limit in a safe venue (go to the mainland and drive on a track).
But at the same time it seems so hard for them to realize they have no idea of what they don't know about driving safely when at the wheel of a sportscar.

If you know of a teen driver (not a raw beginner) or perhaps a spouse that would benefit from a car control class then Phase 1 would be a good event to attend.

Again we are likely to be limited to 30 students per class. Expect the same fast paced runs in small groups and all day activity. The time really flys and you can get very tired by the end of the day.

Although each of the classes is the same format as last time, the course will be different so it won't be that easy. Plus if you are a returning student you can expect more of yourself and drive that much more cleanly and stay ahead of the cones.

Funny thing happened while I was watching the winter olympics the other day. In the slalom one of the biggest mistakes the skiers can make is to get behind on turns, the later they make the turn the worse the line they take and everything starts to unravel while the best times are posted by the skiers that stay ahead of each gate and turn in early- this is exactly the same in driving and can be worse the faster you are trying to go.
