Im needing some time to get my budget straight on my build but Id like to upgrade my clutches if its financially viable. Is the clutch job a difficult job to do? Is it behind the bellhousing like a normal car or is it in the rear with the rest of the tranny? What is the average labor cost to just do clutches.

I want to eventually overbuild the entire tranny but Id like to get by with what I have for 6 months or so. My tranny is perfect but I do a lot of drag launches at the track and want my clutches in tip top shape. Is the 8 plate clutch setup the best to go with for my application?

Is there anything else to do while Im doing the clutches that doesnt cost an arm and a leg?

Car is 2014 GTR Premium FBO e85. Dynos 634 whp .

Thanks,
Joe

I think a 7 plate super stock is even enough in your case. Price is good too.

How to do it... Will leave it for others...

You may want to give Doug at FabShop a call if you are in Florida.
He does a nice setup!

What is the estimated cost of a clutch job? Does anyone know if the clutches are up front or out back?

Ask Kerry (GoonThree) he did them before his build. He had a turbo upgrade and was pushing them hard and had no problems. 750+ if I recall.

Wrong!! He had a lot of problems until Shep fixed it.
I sent him a PM and maybe he'll reply here. Ive done a lot of research the past day or so and have learned a lot. It appears the tranny must come out. Labor to R and R a tranny is 500-750 dollars or more. Dodson 7 plate clutches are ~ 1400 and a billet B basket is ~ 600. Add in the fluid and filter replacement cost and the rest Im still figuring out. Im weighing the cost of a quick clutch replacement vs. a Shep 2.5 at 6900 dollars which comes with an 8 plate superstock (I think) clutch and a 1st gear set.

Joe it would seem based on the cost to remove the tranny, fluids and then parts to upgrade- the Shep 2.5 seems to better fit for you and more bullet proof when you push more. Having to do it again when you upgrade seems like wasted money.

The shipping is the unknown.

If you feel you can squeeze your budget.. Then it's always good to do most of upgrades once you remove it... Am going with a kit similar to 2.5 shep kit but using 9 plates..

Agree. It really seems like the best deal so far. Maybe Shep has one ready. I'll call on Monday and see what kind of time frame.

My problem wasn't slip, it was not shifting because clearance problem on 8 plate. Then car was dropped to Shep. He ask my goals and I say 800 ft lb so he recommended 7 plate because best drivability. Went with his clutch because I don't want him stack another brand and might have issues later when I am 900 miles away.

Got the car back and ran 9.7 and trapped 146.67 mph with no issues. Now with stroker and 30 base turbos, it does slip but it is making over the recommended torque. Old 8 plate that was near new shape per Shep was sold and stacked by Shep for someone in Canada with no issues. He was also having clutch slip on stock motor with aftermarket turbos and stock tranny.

Now time to do final tranny of Shep 1k and call it a day.

Joe remember they all ship empty, you'll need to add Dodsen fluid regardless.

Email him, he usually responds within an hour.

Hey Joe,

I'm in the same boat as you. I'll probably be looking to go with a Shep 2.5 when upgrading to aftermarket turbos on the stock block sometime next year and I think the 2.5, as of right now, is a great value for the dollar for the power levels we'll be looking at.
