I currently have AAM non-catted non-resonated midpipe and Stillen exhaust system. I will soon be adding downpipes as well as a tune. But I am willing to give up the HP gain of downpipes if my GTR will end up sounding like the one in the you tube post above. (i.e. Raspy/ Ricey sound). It just sounds horrible for a supercar to sound like that.

Some people say adding a catted mid-pipe will get rid of the raspy sound? How about instead of catted mid-pipe a resonated midpipe? Will resonators provide the same deadening of the "raspy" sound? Also some say to run Casted downpipes like the AMS ones which are sturdier?

Catted or resonated midpipe will alter the exhaust note about the same. Cats in the midpipe act like a resonator. AMS DP's won't produce a raspiness as long as there is a resonated or muffled rear section.

BTW....that setup in the video sounds absolutely awful!!

Yeah it does sound awful! haha I figure I'd use the worst example possible to add to my question. I really really like the AMS Dps but I do have a NON-Resonated NON-catted AAm midpipe.
If I tuned it with my current non-resonated mid-pipe would I have to retune (pay again) if I added a resonated mid-pipe in case I get the raspy sound?

I noticed you run both catted and non catted mid section. Is it raspy when you run it with the non-catted mid?

An HKS resonated midpipe should help a bit more than a catted Cobb midpipe, I believe.

Yes, I would suggest a re-tune but doubt it would be mandatory. A "clean-up", 1 hr. dyno session should be all that is required.

I have had both on my car back to back and there is very little difference in sound.

I'm not the biggest fan of the HKS resonated midpipe myself. I want my GTR to be loud but without the raspy sound.

You decide what you think from this video. This is AMS DP non-catted, Cobb non-catted straight through midpipe, and a stainless T1R rear section with just resonators. I love it.

GotBoost your car sounds amazing! I had seen this video clip previously but thought this was with a catted midpipe! Makes me feel better this awesome sound is with a non-catted midpipe! Is it NON-resonated as well?

I guess the idea here is to go with AMS downpipes and see how it sounds with my straight through AAM mid-pipe.

Bingo...........

Only resonators are in my rear exhaust section.

Yeah most aftermarket exhausts have resonators in them. I have the Stillen system which has 0 resonators-straight through. Right now with AAM mid and Stillen exhaust with stock DPs it sounds amazing too! (no buzz or raspy sound in any rpm or speed). Hope it stays that way after DPs.

Its going to be loud without resonators.....hopefully it's not raspy with that Stillen rear section.
Loud I don't mind (I can always shift quickly to 6th in the presence of cops hahaha). It's the raspyness that scares me. The fact it isn't raspy now gives me hope it may stay that way? or is that wishful thinking? I guess I can switch out the mid-pipe with a resonated one if it does get raspy....Question is: Will a resonated mid solve the problem if the raspyness becomes an issue?

If you end up with raspiness I do think a resonated mid in your situation will help........only one way to find out about all of this....lol.

I had AAM catless DPs, non-resonated midpipe and a Meisterschaft (straight thru like the Stillen) exhaust - rasped like crazy in the higher RPMs under WOT but still didn't sound as bad as that GTR in the video. Added an HKS resonated midpipe and the rasp went away. Plenty loud as well.

Thanks for your input Jon! Much appreciated- very similar set-up to mine. I have this gut feeling that after I install DPs I will have to sell my AAM mid for a resonated version of some type.

I think I'm going to put in a resonated HKS mid in place of the AAM non-res. Seems like after a lot of discussion this will solve my problem. I need a resonator somewhere in the system.
