Installing Exhaust - how long does it take?

21348 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  seanm
Hey Guys,

I'll be getting some parts in soon and I contacted a local shop (www.speedelement.com) for a quote on installing a couple of parts. Here is my quote:

650.00 for installation, 8+ hours of work to install:

(1) midpipe
(1) downpipe

Is this reasonable? Can you confirm it really takes that long to install a midpipe and downpipe? Seems a bit long to me. Also, if a pro can elaborate on how long it takes to install each piece, that would be great!

Thanks for your help!

It took a friend and I 2.5 hours to remove the factory and install a new midpipe and catback. We did have a lift and could stand under the car. Could take a lot longer if any modifications need to me done.
Midpipe shouldnt take more than an hour, havent done down pipes seems redic it would take 7 hours though.

Seems high. Go to an experienced GT-R Shop. High Likelihood that 1 or more of your O2 Sensors will be messed up in the downpipe. Maybe a shop here will chime in but Most should charge 4-5 hours of labor to do downpipes. (Midpipe must come off to do downpipes).
like others have said midpipe takes an hour max. should take far less actually. downpipes are a different issue. a shop with experience doing gt-r downpipes might be fairly quick, but if it's this shops first go at it who knows. most shops i think want the car there the night before so they can spray it down with pb blaster and let it cool overnight before attempting the work. i did them myself and it was a pain in the ass. and yes, if they break a stud or find a f'd up o2 sensor the process will be much longer.
Thank you all for your input! Thought it might have been a tad bit too long. ;)
Mid pipe can be done in 30-45mins max, nothing to remove other than bolts.

Speedelement is a good shop in the Evo community not sure how many GTR's theyve worked on though.

Yeah, I am aware of that because they worked on my Evo before. They did good work - but the quote for the midpipe/downpipe install seemed a bit too long. I am not at all bashing their company, they do great things and have some cars with great results.
I had downpipes, ypipe and full catback exhaust done in 4 hours at Cobb. The downpipes took 1/2 of that time, they seemed to be a real bear. Like everyone has said, the O2 sensors can be easily stripped. I was in the garage watching them the whole time and they liberally sprayed the O2's with breakfree every chance they got, and there was still 1 of the 4 that was close. The sensors are about $300 a piece so finding an experienced GTR shop pays for itself.

Just some clarification they booked me for 5 hours but part of that was to wait for the exhaust to cool down, the actual work was done in 4.

Sounds about right. most likely going to take less than 8 hours, but seems like that is the going shop rate for DP and MP though. good luck.
Downpipes on these cars can be difficult. I think the estimate and time are realistic.
