Would love to learn more about GR6.. I know its pretty unlikely as its a trade secret...but if anyone can do a small write up of maybe how to upgrade to aftermarket 1st gear that would be excellent!

To do a "small" writeup of one of the biggest jobs that can be done on this box is no easy task. I don´t recommend anyone doing this themselves since special tools are needed and also a lot of knowledge.

I recommend that if you want the job done, contact your nearest Dodson dealer and they´ll help you out.

+1 on this.

I'm an EXPERIENCED wrencher. On the inside, this thing is FULL of tech. Without months of research, I would have been lost with the tiny little things that I did.

It has all of the most difficult problems:

It has a double wet clutch (difficult and finicky) - kind of like some motorcycles
It has a traditional gearset, but with synchros and there's two of them.
It has a valve body like an automatic, which can get out of alignment EASY while you're mucking about with it.
It cannot be successfully worked on without removing it from the car

AND, *drumroll please* - Nissan and borg chose to use the SAME FLUID FOR THE CLUTCH AND GEARSET. ARGGGHHHH!

I wouldn't tear into one of these without someone who had done it before at my side.

Unfortunately, the GR-6 manual, while VERY informative and helpful in the overall situation, is not a traditional transmission "service manual" - it doesn't include method of disassembly/reassembly on the gearset and clutches.

So for guys who want to do first gear or rebuild, they will need other information elsewhere.

Darn.

Bummer that they didn't include more about dismounting the gearset and clutches.

Clutches are "easy" compared to the gearset...

I take on board the advice that working on GR6 transmission is best left to trained specialist, however I would like to read the technical manual kindly shared by paparazzi and the link doesn't seem to work now (Dec 2013), could anyone who obtained a copy share the file again or email me a copy of the pdf ?
