Finally got my car tuned by John at Cobb So Cal. I was debating on waiting for the canned tunes to be available for the 2012 vs paying for a custom tune and decided on the latter. Cobb So Cal isn't even officially open, but their dyno facility is up and running and they obliged me with a custom tune. First off, the guys at the shop were friendly and knowledgeable. The shop is still a work in progress but I could care less, I was more interested in checking out their Time Attack GT-R. What a beast. Anyway, on to the more important stuff.

John says that the stock 2012 GT-Rs usually put down about 460whp on their dyno.

My car already had an HKS midpipe on it, and my baseline was 488whp which he said is pretty healthy.

Next, they installed GotBoost's dual 3" intakes and John tuned the car on 91 octane with my NIS-006 AP. The car put down 537whp.

Then we dumped VP100 gas in, he retuned the car, and it put down 559whp. The car was able to make a little more but he chose to back off and be a bit conservative because my injectors were maxed out.

So, in summary...
488whp Stock with HKS midpipe
537whp HKS midpipe, GotBoost 3" intake, Cobb AP, 91 octane
559whp HKS midpipe, GotBoost 3" intake, Cobb AP, 100 octane

GotBoost's intakes are great. Construction is top notch, they perform well, and sound awesome. Thanks for a great product.

Thanks to all the guys at Cobb So Cal. Per your suggestion, I will probably be back for the ID1000 injectors and downpipe!

Nice numbers. I wonder how much you would have got with just the midpipe and a tune. In other words, how much does an intake add with stock injectors. I was told that adding intake without injectors doesn't add anything as you max out the stock injectors with a tune and midpipe alone. I'm debating on my mods so just curious how much they can safely add power without upgraded injectors. How much boost are you running?

i believe GotBoost has dyno graphs showing the hp increase with the intake alone. It requires a tune but is definitely worth it.

Wow those are some great gains Kai! I too am now running gotboost's 3" intakes and stilling working on my tune with Doug at TopSpeed, but I'm thinking my gains would be similar to yours with my non-resonated AAM mid and 90mm cat-back.

You planning to add downpipes and injectors?

What's the multiplier to get crank HP on the GT-R?

Whats the stock baseline for previous R35 on that dyno?
Stock 2012 GT-Rs typically put down 460whp on this dyno (I think that's what you were asking).

Very nice numbers! Do you feel a big difference over stock?
Big difference. Although, I have to say, it's hard to tell how much faster because to me, the car was already stupid fast compared to my M3, and now it's just stupid stupid fast. The biggest problem I have is that it's so tempting to get on the throttle, but 2-3 seconds of doing that and you are guaranteed a speeding ticket, if not jail.

Nice man ! I gotta go see them too ! :)
Rif, it's awesome man, you gotta do it. Then you can beat the lap time of the Nissan test driver at Willow Springs!

I wasn't planning on it initially, but it is very tempting. John said that the most common Stage 2 setup on the GT-Rs that they do is everything that I have plus ID1000 injectors and downpipes (+/- fuel pumps). Given that my tune was slightly conservative (due to injectors maxing out), he said that with the additional upgrades I could get close to 600whp. Wow. As it is, I can't even use half of my horsepower on the streets of Beverly HIlls, where my average speed to and from work is about 15mph, but what the hell, it would be bad ass I guess.

What's the multiplier to get crank HP on the GT-R?
Well, it's different for each dyno. Some dynos (like Mustang dynos) read low and thus have a high drivetrain loss. On this particular dyno, If I go by what John says, the average 2012 makes 460whp, so a 13.2% drivetrain loss which translates to 530 crank hp. If you multiply my results by 1.132 you get

488whp = 552 crank hp
537whp = 607 crank hp
559whp = 632 crank hp

Keep in mind this is just estimating and may be way off. The most important number really is the delta between the result before the tune and after the tune. That really shows you the gain in horsepower.

Great results Kai!!

How much boost are you running?

Dave
Hi Dave,
I'm not sure. I'll have to plug in my AP and datalog. I believe John said it peaked around 17-17.5psi but I'm not sure.

That 17psi would be a good number. From what I have been reading on the forums it's bad for the stock rods to have a big mid-range torque peak like you would get with a 100% wastgate duty tune. One tuner thinks anything over 530wtq on a Mustang is bad for the stock rods....

BUT...other tuners such as Switzer and Jack C think anything under 575wtq is just fine for the stock rods. Not sure what they think about the spike in TQ or if having no cats/no cats would make a difference...
