There is a No Prep race being put on at a track near me and the class that I have the best chance to win does not allow AWD cars. I am thinking about removing the driveshaft for the front and entering. My car is FBO tuned on Cobb. I plan to use the Cobb Accessport to dial in the traction control so I don't blow the rear tires off. I also have the Syvecs AWD controller so I thought I would just put the car in RWD mode. The track is about 60 miles from me and I plan to remove the driveshaft before driving there. Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts? Could this hurt anything?
Yes it's possible, no it wont hurt anything, but these cars have absolutely no traction without the AWD, to the point that even the Cobb traction control will still not really help, and could hurt the motor if it pulls too much timing. The stock rear suspension on these cars does not allow the rear to squat enough to get traction.
When I drove to the dyno, I got on it in just rwd in 3rd and blew my 18" NT05r's off.
I would not recommend it, and unless they have a "hard tire" class, you will have pretty much no chance
You can remove the driveshaft without any issue, you'll get FWD clutch overheat warnings, and there is a small chance the car will go into a limp mode, if it does you only need to restart the car. If you have some mileage on your car, there is a chance that you'll sling the balls and lock up the FWD unit as tolerances open up. After the even, a simple test is to have the car on a four post lift, and attempt to turn the front wheel drive output flange at the transmission. It will take some effort but you should be able to turn it. If you can not turn it you have likely locked up the unit.
Here are the rules to this thing. I feel like with these restrictions I would have a very good chance, but if running without the front driveshaft could mess up the front wheel drive unit then its not worth it.
Must be daily driven
Complete factory interior (including seats)
Must have windshield wipers/mirrors
Rear wheels must be 17in or larger
Must have DOT stamp front and rear
355 max rear tire width
No Bias ply Tires
Factory power adders only
Full exhaust exiting out of factory location
No AWD vehicles
Current plates/registration
All lights/horn/signals must work
Mickey Thompson 305/45/17 ET Street R (Radial) rears and M&H 275/45/18 Racemaster fronts.
Also, its probably worth noting that I have the AMS 17" rear wheels and Enkei PF01 18" front wheels and Boost Logic rear drag brakes. All of which are pretty light weight.
Not worth it, they'll probably not allow you in the class regardless of how you explain the modifications to make an awd car temporarily run rwd
