I'm thinking of doing the OC one coming up in May.
But, what exactly do you do and what do you get with your $260 registration fee?
Its basically a rally event, they mix it up from time to time changing the format. This time its kind of like a scavenger hunt/objective game where you go from checkpoint to checkpoint taking pictures or doing certain tasks to prove you were there. From what I understand the checkpoints are usually set so you get to go through some nice driving roads.
I just copied and pasted this from a blog post as it gives you a good idea of what to expect:
Previous Targa Trophy Experience rallies were in TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) format, however the San Diego Experience event was based only on checkpoints. Time wasn't recorded, speed wasn't monitored and the distance was not checked - the documentation used was the pictures taken at each checkpoint and the receipts obtained as proof of purchase.
The rally checkpoints were very imaginative. They included stopping at and running into a GNC store to purchase an E-Drive energy shot, running onto a golf course and teeing off, pulling into an Audi dealership and taking a picture with a beautiful Audi R8, and snapping a drive-by photo of the Cardiff Kook (a famous statue in San Diego). These checkpoints were completely different from previous events and involved a lot more getting in and out of our cars, running and completing a task. I think this new slant made the event that much more exciting and competitive because you never had time to become complacent with your driving skills alone, you had to strategize from one checkpoint to the next how to complete the required task as quickly as possible to get back on the road.
Although it was unusual not to be timed, all of us rally drivers still felt the pressure. The competitive aspect of "time" was missing, yet everyone still wanted to cross the finish line first. In fact, we stuck together in groups for the first three-quarters of the rally, and then the last quarter was every man or woman for themselves!
