Transmission and other coolers for track

Hi All,

Just came back from a track day at Sepang. As expected, my transmission recorded a peak of 123deg within 3 laps, which I then went back to the pits to cool down and then out again after it cooled down. Just like to ask for advice on transmission and other coolers for track. I'm quite keen on the HKS transmission cooler. Is there 2 types? ie HKS and HKS Kansai type. Which would be better? And I heard MB has their own in house cooler too. Any comments on that?

So after fitting a transmission cooler, how many laps can the GTR last on Sepang without the transmission crossing 130deg? Which I read is the critical point. After the transmission is settled, would then the engine/brakes/gears need additional cooling? I aim to be able to do at least 10 laps (preferable 20+) without having to stop and without damaging the car.

I'm quite surprise the design of the stock GTR which is considered a super car, only allows it to last 3+ laps around a circuit. Does the Ferrari or Lamborghini suffer from overheating issues as well? Or is it our local weather?

HKS DCT cooler works phenomenal.

Factory should have put in sufficient cooling for track use, but they obviously chose not too. Dumb choice in my opinion based on how they marketed the car. Fit the cooler and your track days will be much more fun.

It depends on how hard you track the car as running 2'30s vs 2'20s have very big difference in load and heat creation. Honestly I dun think this lizard can do 20+ laps as you either run out of fuel or tires by then presuming you had all sorts of coolers done,

Btw I am selling my HKS kansai trans cooler if you wanna consider as I wanna explore other options.

What would be the peak temp after fitting the HKS cooler? Btw do I have to change the transmission oil when i fit this cooler?

Hi sorry miss your questions, the peak temp depends on your pace on track. A reference for you is I hit 132 deg for a set of 5 laps as follows, warm up, 2'26, 2'29, 2'26 then warm down. If I were to muck around doing say 2'32 to 2'35 laps, temp remain in the low 120s after a few laps.

Nope you do not have to change the trans oil for the kansai trans cooler as it cools the water than runs through the tranny as far as I know.

hmm... so the temp still does past 130deg even after fitting the kansai cooler. But I'm more interested in the HKS DCT cooler, which I heard is better. And from what i read in other forums (or stated in owner's manual, which my is in Japanese), as long as your transmission oil hit above 120deg, that means u have to change the transmission oil within 3000km after that right? Btw good time in Sepang ;P
This seems strange. The Nurburgring nordschleife is almost 4 times as long, how did the Stock GT-R able to run at limits? Did the test driver run one lap each time? Just a curious question.

Gonna check with the guys in Germany.

Anyway, the GT-R is known to have heating issues, it is good for setting some good laps time, but do not have long legs. The Evo X SST models are known to have such problems as well. Maybe It will take a few years for the Dual crutch system to improve the cooling. Porsche PDK seems to be ok it seems, or I may be wrong.

Guess u got to factor in the ambient temperature n humidity when they ran the ring..at sepang, its very very hot especially if ure running ard mid day.
been recommended the MB custom transmission cooler, can anyone tell me how effective this is as compared to the HKS DCT cooler? Thanks
