I just noticed a very large crack in my front windshield yesterday. This is the second time that this has happenend. Both times were from what I believe was a rock thrown up from a car in front of me on the freeway. That last time I believe was in January of this year and was large enough to require a replacement windshield. This one is in almost the exact same location, middle of the windshield, just below the rear view mirror mount. This one is also about twice the length of the last one. It was replaced with a Nissan factory windshield.

Is the glass on the GT-R exceptionally fragile, or do I just have bad luck? I can't even see a chip that this spread from.

My windshield on GTR is just fine so far (22k miles).

My Murano though had a cracked windshield within probably 5k miles.

How much does a GTR windshield cost to replace?

I got a quote for $1100 on my 2009, but my insurance covered it all except for the comprehensive deductible.

I have a small hit in the same exact location. Given, nothing has happened to the windshield yet, but I plan on getting a new one for the sake of it... I wonder if the "rock" part of your name has anything to do with the bad luck

Purposely thin for weight reasons.

We had this problem on the EVO VIII and IX. All the track guys would eventually crack the windscreen due to body flex around corners. The EVO glas was about 15% thinner than the regular Lancers for weight reasons.

We all solved it by replacing with aftermarket normal Lancer glass. It was 3-5 pounds heavier, depending on manufacturer.

I don't think this is an option for us. No other glass fits.

Well, Safelite is coming out this afternoon to replace the windshield in my driveway. I will never understand insurance logic, but I'm not going to question it since it works out in my favor. My deductible is $500, but since I have mechanical breakdown coverage, that deductible drops to $50. I guess they consider a windshield crack a mechanical breakdown. $50 is a lot better than $500, so I'm not complaining! This was the same situation with my last replacement in January, $50 instead of $500.

Hmm, I'm not sure how this works! Will this raise the insurance premium at all or is this simply something the insurance will take care of?

Are you close to Premier either in LA or SF? If so their Diamond Fusion product is fantastic. Two year warranty on the product and it will save you a new windshield in the event of a rock impact plus it will save you from the micro-impacts you get from the track.

I would make the car stiffer. Two benefits. The glass doesn't crack, and the suspension stays put.

I have seen/heard a few windshields. The glass in a GT-R is probably pretty stressed, but I think some people may just be more unlucky than others.

You need to do this, Brent. I'm very happy with mine.

I'll have to look into this. The crack I have currently is about 10 inches long. I don't even see a chip where it started from.

Fortunately, I don't think these windshield replacements had any impact on my insurance premium.

on my 2009, I had a rock chip driving on the freeway to the Nissan dealer to get my 1000 mi POS done, I was PISSED! They used safelite, but I ended up paying $500 on my deductible.
I was thinking about clear-bra'ing the front windshield, and might do it soon.

Is the film completely invisible? Any streaking? Easy to clean? I was thinking of getting this done.

Thanks.

You cannot 'clear bra' the windshield, it has to be a specific windshield product and the best currently on the market is Premier's Diamond Fusion. It is essentially invisible to the naked eye; easy to keep clean; highly protective. It's not cheap, however it is better than replacing windshields often. I felt the OEM glass was fairly 'weak' as my car developed a huge number of 'divots' and abrasions from running at the track. The Diamond Fusion will prevent this. As with all things 'film' wise: use the best installer possible; Premier themselves if practical.

Clarity is almost photo quality. No streaking so far, but it has a few tiny pits from track days and driving back and forth in the high desert to Spring Mountain. I use detail spray as a cleaner, and it works great. I plan to do this with all my cars.

If they replace the windshield, really look for damage during replacement. They scratched the hell out of the area surrounding the windshield on my daily driver when they scored the adhesive to remove the old windshield.

Thanks Greg. Looks like I'll go ahead and make that appointment after all.
