Would you feel safe tracking with my setup?

I did a few track days last summer in 80-degree weather when my only mods were: mid-pipe, exhaust & custom AP tune (@ 16 lbs/boost on 93-octane) and while I didn't datalog at the track, my boost guage didn't flash and all temps stayed in very safe ranges.

My question is, with my current mods (see signiture...18 lbs/boost on E85), is my car still safe to spend a day at the track in 80-degree temps? To be clear, I do periodic datalogging on the street now and all logs look good, but street driving datalogs aren't a good representation of what I'll see on the track, as the car will be running at a HIGH intensity for longer periods of time.

Question: Would you do the track day if you were me? Any advice?

Thanks!

I would guess that you are really stressing the internals with that set up on the road course. IMHO I would turn the boost down a bit for the road course just to be safe. As you know the road course is much harder on our cars than a few trips down the drag strip.

+1000. Have the boost gauge up for knock detection AT ALL TIMES.

The problem is not just knock, though. The amount of power you're pushing. The stock con-rods are poorly up to the task of 600whp for a 3/4 mile stretch like at VIR. 530? Well, okay, but 600 and up, they can bend.

Thank you both for your insight. It's not what i wanted to hear, but in my gut, it's what I thought I would hear. The track day I'm going to is a private rental with cts-v's available id you don't want to drive your own car...I'll play it safe and do that.
I track my GTR on 16lbs boost, sharif tuned it to make around 450whp.

my advice would be to make sure you run higher octane fuel on very hot days.

find a good tuner tht you trust, one that has plenty of experience with track tunes, not just street tunes.

i've really enjoyed the extra power. there is risk involved but that comes with the modding game in play to get the power. I'm lucky enough to live 2 hours from a great tuner - which helps alot with the safety factor. honestly though, sharif hasnt had to tweak one thing with the tune in my car after many many track days. i did get a bad tank of 93 at the exxon right outside roebling road and the knock sensor went off once in the heat of the day - we put some 100 octane in at the track and the problem was solved - it was close to 100 degs that day. just be careful, watch the gauges and run the higher octane on hot days. i always run race gas at road atlanta, its easy the pumps take credit cards. the only reason i didn't run race gas initially at RR that day, was the inconvience of waiting for someone to unlock the pumps each time the car burns a half tank every session

He's running two more pounds of boost than you and E85. I am sure his car is a torque monster. Torque is probably what would break something in his set up. A perfect tune won't make the engine internals any stronger. A tune might help make it last a bit longer but IMHO he is rolling the dice on the road course with his set up. If it were me I would turn the boost down for the road course. Particularly if it is just for fun. Might be a second or two slower but would most likely have just as much fun.

Actually my gtr will be safelynsitting in my garage that day. I'll be driving one of the track-cars they make available (2011 cts-v). At first I was disappointed about not driving my gtr, but now I'm looking forward to the cts-v. I suspect at the end of the day, it will REALLY make me like my gtr.

My setup is probably similar, 16lbs tapering down as the revs increase. Sharif also set me up with an 18lb 93oct curve as well but he only recommends running the 'detuned' curve for track, especially in the summer.

I like 16psi peak for aggressive track use on stock engines. Shouldn't have any issues at that level.

With respect to the OP, and his E85 tune, the tune can be perfectly safe and knock free but still overpowering the mechanical limits of the engine. I would also ask your tuner to slow the boost ramp slightly, to help keep the trq loads down at low RPM. I tell my customers that the higher boost maps are loads of fun...on the street...but not a great idea for track use if engine longevity is your goal.
